The ranking system in tennis was removed in 2012 due to the fact that it caused a number of problems for players and tournaments. Players were forced to play in tournaments in order to maintain their rankings, while tournaments were limited in the number of players they could invite due to the system. The removal of the ranking system has allowed players more freedom in deciding which tournaments they participate in and which tournaments they don't.
